Finally, ALBANIA - a member of the Council of Europe

THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE’S COMMITTEE OF MINISTERS VOTES IN FAVOUR OF ALBANIA’S ADMISSION AS A FULL-FLEDGED MEMBER OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE At last, our country’s long-missing status as a full member of the Council of Europe was achieved on Monday, as ATSH reports from Strasbourg. In anticipation of this day, so many statements by Albanian and foreign officials have been made and so much speculation in the press and public opinion has taken place that the news, although known and expected, does not lose any of the importance of the historic moment. Albania’s membership in the Council of Europe carries multiple significance. Above all, it judges the country in relation to Western values and standards. At the same time, it is an assessment of the progress of our country’s pluralist transition. After 7 years of a difficult path, but with the determination to meet the conditions of this European body, our country succeeded. The positive vote of the Committee of Ministers, expressed in Strasbourg, marks the political completion of a long and not easy process. This important step marks a new moment for Albania and for its relations with European institutions. Yesterday’s decision, according to reports, was taken with full understanding by the member states, opening new opportunities for Albania for integration, strengthening democratic institutions and consolidating the rule of law. In the assessment of many analysts and diplomats, Albania’s admission as a full member of the Council of Europe is also an encouragement to continue the reforms undertaken, to improve legislation and to raise democratic standards in the country. Albania has made its choice, and that choice is irreversible. (Continues on page 3)
